‘Absolutely remarkable ‘: Pundits react to astonishing Rangers Europa League moment

With no game at the weekend, it will be hard to bump Allan McGregor’s save from the back pages for the next few days.

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has already compared it to one of football’s most iconic stops, and the immediate reaction from co-commentators Stephen Craigan and Alex Rae was only fractionally less effusive.

Former Ibrox star Rae pointed out that this wasn’t the first such save fro the 39-year-old, who has produced numerous big moments throughout his career.

Craigan, meanwhile, said it was a save that just had to be admired.

It could prove to be a vital moment in the tie, with his athleticism in the final minute helping to ensure Steven Gerrard’s men left Prague with a 1-1 draw.

Rangers welcome Slavia to Ibrox next Thursday, and will be confident of progression to the Europa League’s last eight after a much-improved performance in the second half.

It was McGregor’s contribution that stood out above all others, and speaking on Rae said: “Absolutely remarkable save. How he gets down there and manages to claim that ball.

“He’s been doing it his whole career and he pulls off big saves. Tremendous.”

Former Partick Thistle and Motherwell man Craigan added: “Listen, you just have to admire that.

“Sometimes you don’t need to say anything. You just look at the pictures, and that was incredible, it really was.

“Time and time again he’s come up with big saves at big moments.

“I just know Ally McCoist in the studio will be saying ‘There’s no-one on the post’.

“You don’t need anyone on the post when you’ve got a left paw like Allan McGregor has, Mr McCoist.”

Speaking after the match, McCoist said: “I’m all in. I’m allowed to get carried away this evening.

“It’s gone from one of the best saves this season to one of the best saves ever. I don’t care. It’s up there.”
