‘Absolutely magnificent’… Michael Dawson left stunned by £10m Tottenham player vs Newcastle

Michael Dawson was left stunned after a brilliant piece of defending from Ben Davies for Tottenham Hotspur today.

Tottenham got off to a slightly shaky start at the back today as Newcastle United created a couple of decent opportunities.

Bruno Guimaraes went close just minutes before Alexander Isak looked set to put the Magpies ahead.

Anthony Gordon made a brilliant run in behind Tottenham’s defence and played the ball across Tottenham’s six-yard box.

Isak looked set to tap the ball past Guglielmo Vicario before Ben Davies produced an exceptional interception. And the first-half moment earned Davies some praise from former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson.

Speaking on at halftime, Dawson lauded Davies for preventing an early Newcastle goal.

“Oh 100 per cent and it could have been a goal,” the former Spurs man said. “When it was live, I was thinking ‘how has he missed?’

“We see the replay, it’s absolutely magnificent defending from Ben Davies. We see some defenders who just let him put the ball in the back of the net, he could’ve scored an own goal.

“That slight touch just took it away from Isak. No wonder he’s fist-bumping, it’s like scoring a goal.”

Davies has performed well since coming into the side after Micky van de Ven’s injury. The Welshman has always provided a safe pair of hands at left-back and has stepped into central defence over the past few weeks.

It’s fair to say that Spurs have felt Van de Ven’s absence but the man looked solid once again today.

Davies’ block proved to be vital for Tottenham today as they went on to dominate the game thereafter.

Destiny Udogie and Richarlison were on target in the first half to hand Spurs a much-needed two-goal cushion.

Postecoglou’s men then pressed home their advantage as Richarlison netted his second before Son made no mistake from the spot.

It was a huge win for Spurs after they had failed to pick up all three points in their last five games heading into today’s game.
