‘A future star’… Pundit blown away by the pace of £26m Chelsea player, thinks he has huge potential

Robbie Mustoe has suggested that Chelsea have a future star in a player who surprised him with his pace in the draw with Manchester City on Saturday.

Mauricio Pochettino‘s side produced one of their performances of the season at the Etihad Stadium. A late deflected goal from Rodri was all that stopped them clinching the three points.

In truth, there were impressive displays all over the pitch from the visitors. Axel Disasi produced several moments of last-ditch defending which can only inspire those around him. Meanwhile, the midfield partnership of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo has arguably never looked better.

Malo Gusto lauded after Chelsea draw

But speaking on podcast, Robbie Mustoe suggested that he was hugely impressed by the performance of Malo Gusto at right-back. And he shared what surprised him in the draw with the champions.

“I’m going to go on to my under-appreciated performer [of the week], and this is both under-appreciated and one to watch: 20 years of age, Malo Gusto, the French full-back that’s in the team now as Reece James is injured, is getting better and better every week I see him,” he said.

“First off is not questioned is his technical ability. Very skilful, good decision-maker. What has surprised me is his pace, his defensive one on ones. And whenever you hear of pace, good on one on ones and good on the ball technically, then you’ve got a future star there.”

A potential bargain

Jeremy Doku has the potential to tear opposition full-backs apart. The Belgian, on his day, is arguably one of the most exciting players in the division.

However, Doku was frustrating to watch on Saturday. He saw a lot of the ball. But he was rarely able to beat a man and create an opportunity for a teammate. And Gusto has to take huge credit for that.

Obviously, so much has been said about the money Chelsea have spent over the last couple of years. But if Gusto’s display is a sign of what is to come in the future, then you have to say that signing him for will prove to be a real bargain for the Blues.
