‘A bit funny’… The real reason Celtic didn’t sign 23-year-old striker in the January window

Celtic’s activity in the January transfer window can, I think it’s safe to say, be described as disappointing in the eyes of the fans.

The majority of the speculation surrounded Celtic and their apparent pursuit of Bologna striker, Sydney van Hooijdonk.

The young Dutch striker has been linked with a move to the Hoops since as early as November last year but despite all the January rumours, van Hooijdonk sealed a move to Norwich City with Brendan Rodgers signing Adam Iadah on loan instead.

It is fair to say that this move really confused the Celtic fans especially after reports suggested that van Hooijdonk’s camp was waiting for Celtic to make a move.

To clear this up, Sky Sports journalist, Anthony Joseph, shares the real reason why Celtic didn’t sign the young Dutch striker and it may not go down well with the Hoops support.

Joseph said [], “The circumstances of that were a bit funny in terms of how Sydney van Hooijdnk who has been quoted in Italy as saying that they were waiting for Celtic to come in.

“They [Bologna] delayed approaches from other clubs, when Bologna were getting approaches from other clubs.

“But Celtic made no contact. My understanding is Celtic didn’t come in with any approach for Sydney van Hooijdonk in the January window.

“Celtic will have their reasons for not going in for him. The interest might just have cooled later on. I don’t know that for sure but that seems to be the case.”

So there you have it. Despite all the speculation and rumour and the fact that Fabrizio Romano claimed Celtic wanted him, the club never made any contact regarding the 23-year-old.

Whether signing Idah instead was a better option remains to be seen. The on-loan Norwich man had a solid debut for Celtic in the 1-1 draw with Aberdeen and looks a decent prospect.
