‘A bigger injury’: Liverpool provide update on £140k-a-week star ahead of PNE clash

Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has provided an update on Reds ace James Milner ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match.

The 36-year-old featured for just 26 minutes in Sunday’s Premier League hammering of Manchester United, Curtis Jones taking his place.

Milner injured himself turning for a misplaced Robertson pass, and Lijnders revealed that he aggravated the problem by chasing after an opposition player making a run.

The Liverpool assistant also confirmed that the star would likely be out until after the international break.

“Millie felt something, he felt something wasn’t right in his hamstring, a little bit tight,” Lijnders.

“Then [Mason] Greenwood made this run and he decides, ‘I need to catch him’ – how Millie is, putting the team always first. And that created a bigger injury in that moment, that run.

“It shows a lot about his character and his will power to put the team first.

“This [injury] will be until the international break for sure, so it’s a long one. But we will need him in the coming period.”

Liverpool head to Preston North End in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

The Reds have a fair few issues in midfield, with Naby Keita unlikely to be risked, and Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara and Harvey Elliott out alongside Milner.

That leaves three senior centre-mids in Jordan Henderson, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
