91 touches, 92.5% passing accuracy – under-the-radar Spurs ace could play a big role in Mason’s tenure

Tottenham Hotspur interim manager Ryan Mason got his tenure off to a victorious start as Spurs ran out 2-1 winners over Southampton on Wednesday night.

The hosts fell behind on 30 minutes when Danny Ings beat Serge Aurier to James Ward-Prowse’s corner and headed off the far post into the back of the net.

Although Saints held on for a 1-0 half-time lead, Spurs grew into the game and levelled on 60 minutes as Mohammed Salisu’s block fell kindly for Gareth Bale to fire home.

VAR then played a big part in a dramatic finale as Son Heung-min saw a goal ruled out before a later incident saw a penalty awarded to Spurs, which the South Korean successfully converted.

While Bale and Son were in the spotlight due to their goalscoring contributions, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was an unsung hero in the game with a typically solid performance.

“A constant noisy presence, he tried to marshal the troops,” wrote , who gave him 7 out of 10. “Made some vital interceptions, including one late on to halt a Saints break in added time.”

The gave him the same rating and wrote: “As usual, the Dane kept the ball moving against his former club in a steady but unspectacular display.”

And according to , Hojbjerg attempted 80 passes with an impressive 92.5 percent accuracy, got 91 touches of the ball, delivered five accurate long balls, and chipped in with an interception and a clearance.

The 25-year-old’s displays often go under the radar but he’s consistently good and could play a big role in what is hopefully a successful tenure for Mason.
