85% pass success, 3 long balls: Liverpool player justifies Klopp trust

Takumi Minamino is one Liverpool player who is almost resigned to the fact that he’s second fiddle. With Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane ahead of him, games time comes at a premium.

Last night, he did get the chance to star in the Carabao Cup. Not only did he star, but in scoring twice he showcased his undoubted talents to a seriously impressed Jurgen Klopp.

The Japan international set the tone after four minutes. He opened his account for the 2021/22 campaign and doubled his tally 10 minutes from the end of the contest.

Divock Origi scored and Liverpool were given a pretty routine night at Carrow Road against the Premier League basement boys.

For Minamino this may well have been a mini audition. Klopp handed him a chance to prove himself and he didn’t disappoint, starting on the left wing.

Minamino has now scored six goals for Liverpool since his £7 million transfer from Salzburg in 2020. He also scored twice for Southampton during a 10-game loan spell last season.

The 31-cap star is a bit of an enigma. At 26, he isn’t in his prime yet, but Liverpool might have anticipated him making more of a claim for a regular place.

With that in mind, the time could be now for Minamino.

Statistically speaking: Minamino shows Klopp he deserves regular Liverpool chance

Last night, the Liverpool boss would have been impressed. Not only because he scored twice but also because he showcased the talent that Reds supporters perhaps haven’t seen yet.

Some statistics courtesy of highlight just how good he was. He had 45 touches of the ball and completed 85% of his passes on the night.

He also scored with both his shots on target and that level of clinical finish will only enhance his chances of getting more game time.

It has been perhaps harsh that Klopp hasn’t used him for a single minute in the Premier League yet.

Liverpool are flying high though and perhaps the boss’ decision is justified at the moment.

With progression secured in the Carabao Cup, that probably does guarantee Minamino another game in the near future.

It’s vital that theplayer continues to impress in every game that comes his way.
