8 interceptions, 2 tackles: Roma man shows why Arsenal missed a trick

Thomas Partey hasn’t been in the best of form for Arsenal and last night’s Europa League might have given the Gunners a taste of what they could have won.

Mikel Arteta saw his side draw 1-1 with Slavia Prague, with Tomas Holes netting a late away goal for the visitors.

Partey was hauled off after 77 minutes and after another frustrating performance from the ex-Atletico Madrid man, supporters are growing worried.

The 27-year-old cost the Gunners £45 million and it’s fair to say that he’s yet to live up to such a substantial price tag.

He has struggled with fitness problems and that in turn has led to a severe bout of inconsistency.

In Holland last night, one man was handing Arsenal a taste of what they might have signed had they shopped on the Italian high street instead.

Amadou Diawara was on the shortlist at the Emirates Stadium, with Roma wanting to offload the midfield talent.

Statistically speaking

Last night he highlighted his credentials with a scintillating performance against Ajax. Roma won 2-1 in Amsterdam, with the Guinean bang in form.

he registered eight interceptions, two tackles and finished the game with an 80% pass success ratio.

It was a performance befitting of a player in his midfield role and Partey would be wise to take note.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, of course, but the decision by the Gunners to prioritise Partey over Diawara doesn’t look a great one.

Interestingly, the man who earns hasn’t been a regular member of the team at Roma and looks someway down the pecking order still.

If there’s an option to sign him in the summer, Arsenal can’t afford to miss out again.
