£60m player is Liverpool’s mystery midfield target for Arne Slot

It was reported on Tuesday morning that Liverpool are in talks with a mystery defensive midfielder from outside of the Premier League.

Indeed, according to , the Reds are in talks with a defensive midfield player from outside of England.

As you can imagine, this led to all sorts of speculation online as fans tried to decode who this player could be.

Now, speaking to KS1 TV, Steve Kay has shared the identity of this mystery player.

Indeed, according to the journalist, the player that Liverpool are courting in this position is none other than Porto’s Alan Varela.

Varela was linked with Liverpool earlier in this transfer window, and now, it sounds as though the Reds are ready to firm up this interest.

Liverpool want Alan Varela

Kay shared what he knows about the man.

“Yeah look this is the guy they want to bring in as the number six. Argentinian under 23 international Alan Varela. Last year they were linked with him. Michael Edwards and Arne Slot, from what I’m told today, they love this player.” Kay said.

“He’s a really good player. They see him as the player to play next to his fellow countryman Alexis Mac Alliser who they want to play further forward.”

Alan Varela deal looks very possible

This is probably the most concrete rumour we’ve had around Liverpool all summer long.

The Athletic say that talks are underway with this mystery number six, while Kay says that this is a player Michael Edwards absolutely loves.

Of course, as with any transfer, getting a deal over the line is much easier said than done, especially when you’re negotiating with a club like Porto.

However, with a release clause reportedly in place, the Reds could get this deal done in a similar way to how they signed Alexis Mac Allister and Dominic Szoboszlai last summer.

This is a move that makes a lot of sense, and the Reds could be onto a winner here if they manage to sign Varela.
