£60m defender wants to leave title winners after being linked with Liverpool move

Liverpool had a slow start to the summer transfer window, yet things could be about to finally pick up for the Anfield side in the market.

Liverpool are in talks to sign Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, with the Spanish international expected to become the Reds first major arrival of the summer having so far not spent a single penny in the window.

With RB Leipzig also interested in Liverpool’s Tyler Morton, August is looking to be a busy month for Arne Slot’s side, who head into the new Premier League season as potential underdogs for the title based on impressive results this pre-season.

And a player rumoured with a move to Liverpool could be about to push through an exit.

Piero Hincapie open to Bayer Leverkusen exit after Liverpool interest

According to Florian Plettenberg, Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie is open to leave the Bundesliga champions this summer, with Liverpool linked with the Ecuador international to replace Joel Matip.

Plettenberg wrote: “Piero Hincapie, one to watch now as the 22 y/o defender could leave Leverkusen in August! Hincapie is open for a new challenge as he wants to be a regular starter next season. There are inquiries and talks with other top clubs. But no agreements yet. Contract valid until 2027.”

With the versatile defender making over 40 appearances for Leverkusen last season, Hincapie would be a great addition for a club like Liverpool who are in the market for a left-sided centre-back to replace the likes of Matip.

Valued at £60m, Hincapie would be an ideal follow-up signing for Liverpool once Zubmendi is through the door, and news that the defender wants to leave should send a clear message to the Reds that a move could be on.

Hincapie could be a dream defensive signing for the Reds

After a double-winning season, Hincapie has shown his credentials as a top addition for most big clubs around Europe this summer, yet Liverpool could be the dream destination for the Ecuador international.

The 22-year-old can operate both as a centre-back and left-back, offering Liverpool depth in two key positions heading into the new season where an addition in defence could be huge for Slot.

And with Hincapie keen to leave Leverkusen, Liverpool could come to an agreement rather quickly with the youngster, who could be easily sold on the prospect of moving to Anfield this summer.
