£60m centre-back on Tottenham radar said to be up for new challenge

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Piero Hincapie in recent months and speculation over his future continues to intensify.

For instance, reported in November that the 21-year-old has been scouted by Spurs on numerous occasions over the past 12 months.

Now, Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg has provided an update that bodes well for Tottenham in their pursuit of Hincapie.

The reporter took to to claim that the Bayer Leverkusen man is “open for a new challenge in winter as he wants to play regularly. He added that the defender “is not happy as a substitute.”

However, Plettenberg’s report is not all good news for Spurs and other suitors. He also claimed that Leverkusen “wants to keep him”, with two of their defenders set for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Edmond Tapsoba and Odilon Kossounou are expected to play for Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast respectively in the competition, which takes place in January and February.

Plettenberg also revealed how much interest there is in Hincapie. He said the player has “many inquiries on the table” and that “talks took place” with unidentified parties.

As well as Tottenham, Liverpool are apparently in pursuit. The journalist said the Reds are “monitoring him but there is no offer; no concrete talks yet”.

Piero Hincapie would be a good shout for Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham could certainly do with bolstering their defensive ranks in 2024, particularly considering how badly things went when both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero were out.

Hincapie is a top talent who has a £60million release clause and, while he’s not necessarily available club-side, the player himself apparently seems open to a new challenge.

The left-footer is a ‘‘ centre-back who the Bundesliga  has deemed ‘one of the most promising defenders in football’, likening him to Lucas Hernandez.

And last year, Jacek Kulig of  deemed Hincapie a “complete and dominant CB” with plenty of great traits who’s a “top talent”.

This is certainly one to watch for Tottenham fans. The player ticks a lot of boxes for Ange Postecoglou and, with a bit of pressure and a big bid, Spurs may just be able to convince Leverkusen to sell.
