£55m forward Arsenal wanted this summer just scored a hat-trick for his club immediately after deadline day
Although Arsenal ended up signing Raheem Sterling incredibly late on deadline day, Edu admitted that wasn’t a move on the club’s radar at the start of the summer.
Arsenal signed Sterling as a last-minute remedy, a decision that allowed the club to send Reiss Nelson on loan to Fulham to gain valuable first team minutes.
Nelson will now join both Emile Smith Rowe and Alex Iwobi in Fulham’s frontline in what feels like an extension of the Hale End academy.
That being said, Arsenal did get their man, and Sterling could make his debut for the club in the upcoming north London derby, a baptism of fire.
But before signing the England international, Arsenal were linked with a few other wingers this summer, players who appear to have been longer term targets.
Arsenal wanted to sign Nico Williams, however the Spaniard preferred to stay at Athletic Club this summer.
Arsenal target Raphinha scores incredible hat-trick for Barcelona in 7-0 win
As well as Williams, Arsenal were also considering a bid for Raphinha according to reports, the former Leeds United winger who seemed to have an uncertain future at Barcelona.
It was reported that Barcelona may try to sell Raphinha to ease their FFP issues this summer.

However, Raphinha was determined to stay at Barcelona and work under their new manager Hansi Flick.
And judging by Saturday’s 7-0 win against Real Valladolid, the Brazilian made the right call.
Raphinha opened the scoring in the 20th minute, starting the game at left-wing, and then completed his hat-trick by the 72nd minute.
And although Arsenal supporters may ultimately be happy that Sterling was signed late on, perhaps Raphinha is demonstrating what they could have had with a more concerted effort.
Declan Rice red card could cause issue for Arsenal in north London derby
Whilst Arteta would surely love to have a player like Raphinha at his disposal right now, he does have a more immediate concern with a tie against Tottenham Hotspur on the horizon.
Immediately after the international break, Arsenal will face Spurs with Declan Rice after his red card.
Gary Lineker shared his honest verdict on Rice’s red card, a decision which continues to baffle a lot of football supporters.
But with Mikel Merino already injured at Arsenal, Arteta has a selection headache against Spurs.
And perhaps the Arsenal manager may deploy Kai Havertz in midfield once again.
