£50m England international says he once almost joined Everton instead of Tottenham

Everton have had some interesting transfer near misses over the years.

Luis Diaz was close to joining Everton before ultimately ending up at Liverpool, while David Moyes recently named Robert Huth as a player who nearly signed for Everton.

Huth isn’t the only multi-time Premier League winning defender to nearly sign for Everton though.

Indeed, speaking on his podcast, Kyle Walker has now admitted that he almost signed for the Toffees before joining Tottenham as a young player.

Walker says that he very nearly joined Everton, but, ultimately, Spurs showed more intent so he joined the north London club instead.

Kyle Walker almost joined Everton

Walker told the story of how he almost signed for the Merseyside club.

The man says David Moyes nearly signed him and Kyle Naughton in a double deal.

Naughton was even invited to Moyes’ house to discuss terms, but Walker wasn’t given such an invitation.

“I was close to signing for Everton before I signed for Tottenham. Just to let you know,” Walker said.

“Who was manager?” Walker was asked.

“David Moyes,” Walker said.

“But didn’t Spurs sign both you and Naughton?” The host asked.

“Yeah, and Naughts went to his house. Naughts went to Moyes’ house and he never invited me. So I went down to Devon, to Tottenham and I was like okay they like me more, so I signed for Tottenham,” Walker added.

Everton could’ve had an amazing defence

If Everton had done this deal for Walker, they could’ve had one of the best defensive units in Europe at one point.

John Stones and Walker made up part of a treble-winning backline just a few years ago, but, in another world, they could’ve been lining up for Everton with Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka in tow.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that would have been one of the best backlines in England.

Walker has been described as one of the best right-backs in Premier League history, and if he’d played for Everton, perhaps the Toffees could’ve made that push to a Champions League place at some point in the mid-2010s.

This is a very interesting hypothetical transfer, and it’s one that Everton must regret missing out on.

Of course, Seamus Coleman has been a brilliant servant for Everton at right-back over the past 15 years, but Walker has hit higher heights than the Irishman ever has.
