5 of the best Sheffield United loan signings ever made

Sheffield United have had to make the best use of the loan market in the last two decades as the club has shifted from Premier League to League One and back again.

The Blades have brought in plenty of players during that time. A lot of those players, too, have been on loan deals.

Loan switches can sometimes work out and, as we all know, sometimes they can go disastrously wrong.

United can boast its fair share of good and bad ones. In terms of the worst, the likes of Simon Lappin and Craig Beattie are just two who spring to mind!

But, there are also a number of loanees who have done very well at Bramall Lane.

With that being said, here’s a look at FIVE of the very best loan signings Sheffield United have ever made.

David Cotterill

Signed on loan before making a permanent switch to the club, Cotterill proved to be an excellent fit for the Blades following Premier League relegation.

Cotterill scored a number of crucial goals for the Blades and helped Kevin Blackwell’s team to the playoff final.

Sadly, it wasn’t to be for United or Cotterill and he was gradually moved out of the club the following year.

Matty Phillips

Few players have had such an impact at Sheffield United for such a short space of time as Matty Phillips did.

The flying winger joined from Blackpool back in 2011 and scored six times in six appearances in League One for the Blades.

However, he was recalled almost immediately and has since gone on to forge a fine top-level career.

Gary Cahill

In terms of players who’ve gone to be hugely successful in their careers, few players can top Gary Cahill when it comes to Sheffield United players.

Cahill joined the Blades under Brian Robson following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

He only stayed three months but made a lasting impression on fans at the club. It’s little surprise to see Cahill has gone on to be a hugely successful defender in the English game.

Conor Coady

The then-Liverpool man proved to be an absolutely roaring success for Sheffield United.

Coady became integral for the Blades as they embarked on an epic FA Cup run under Nigel Clough. Coady scored crucial goals along the way, too, and was integral for Clough.

The midfielder provided energy, commitment, and quality to a team that desperately needed it. The only shame was that the season ended in a whimper and Coady went on to sign for Huddersfield instead.

Dean Henderson

It would be remiss of us to exclude current number one and Manchester United loanee, Dean Henderson.

The stopper has been simply superb for the Blades. Now in his second loan spell, last season as he kept 21 Championship clean sheets.

He’s already into double figures this season, too. A player loved by everyone at Bramall Lane, Henderson will go down as one of the finest loan signings ever made by the club.
