It’s not been the worst of seasons in the Special One’s return to the Stamford Bridge, with a Premier League title still on the horizon, and just three games away from a Champions League winners medal, it could turn into a great one. But there is areas of the team which need a look at if Chelsea are continue to challenge domestically, and on a continental basis regularly.
Mourinho has leant towards using Cesar Azpilicueta, a natural right-back, at left-back for large parts of the season. Still to this day no one understands why Ashley Cole has been almost forgotten about, but it’s a move that has proved quite successful this season. Despite this, I’d love to see Chelsea enter the market for Southampton full-back Luke Shaw. Born in London and a Chelsea fan, it wont take too much persuading to pull Shaw from the Saints, and at around £20million, he may be worth the punt with his potential shooting through the roof.
Talking of shooting, it’s been something Chelsea’s strikers have done very little of, at least accurately, the last two seasons. This is something of a major issue in my eyes, and it’s what stops us playing the expansive football Liverpool and Manchester City have played this season. Although having Romelu Lukaku return from Goodison could be seen as a new signing, the main one of everyone’s lips this week is Diego Costa. Costa appears on the verge of completing a £50million move to West London, the semi-final of the Champions League being seen as his final audition in front of Abramovich. Big money for someone who’s only really shone this season following the departure of Radamel Falcao, but the way our current strikers have performed, it’s a gamble I believe must be taken.
To continue along the striker route, Edinson Cavani is just another one of a long list mentioned every time a transfer window comes around. Having not hit his Napoli heights in the French capital, and playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the Matador is said to be keen for a move again. Chelsea are always linked, and there’s no change this time. The 27 year old is still someone I’d like to see in a Chelsea shirt, despite how awful he was in the recent Champions League Quarter Final against us. He has everything to continue to be a clinical, world-class forward, and the World Cup this summer is where I see him regaining some of his previous form. Having said that, his goal scoring record at PSG is still respectable, just not the same as his Napoli strike rate.
I’m going to go back to left back now, with Spanish full back Alberto Moreno . Rumours have circulated in the latter half of this week that Chelsea’s loanee out in Seville, Marko Marin, is key for a stay, and the club are willing to take Marin and offer Chelsea a player in return. Someone that was on Mourinho’s radar at Real Madrid, and continued onto Chelsea, Moreno is the obvious option. Rakitic’s name is thrown about, but as their best player this seems unlikely. Moreno has played a key role in Sevilla’s Europa League run this season, and at just 21 already has 1 Spain cap to his name. Although I’d rather have Shaw and keep Marin, getting a player with the quality, and again potential, of Moreno would not be a bad move for Chelsea.
Finally, someone who rumours have been very quiet, but someone I’d love to see Chelsea go in for. Angel Correa. The San Lorenzo attacking midfield has ticked over to 19 years old this season, and already has 57 San Lorenzo league appearances to his name. Atletico Madrid and Manchester City are said to be in pole position to swoop for the Argentinian, but with the purchasing power Chelsea also possess, there’s no reason why we aren’t capable of getting his signature. Confident on the ball and inept in front of goal, Correa already shows signs of being a world class attacking midfielder in years to come, and a cheap gamble just to boost the midfield would be something that personally, I’d love to see.
This could turn out to a great summer for Chelsea fans, if we can get one or two of these targets, added to our current squad, and the vast number of loanees to come back, we could have one of the best, young squads in the world. Courtois, Lukaku, Zouma, McEachran, Marin, Bamford, Piazon, Atsu, the list goes on. Let’s see Abramovich get that famous cheque book out once again this summer.
