TBR View: Nunes transfer should boost options in central midfield for Everton
Last summer was a sensational one for the Blues as they strengthened their midfield.
Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan joined the club to fix the centre of the spine and had monstrous impacts.
However, aside from the duo, there proved little in the way of back-up options. The squad was incredibly squad last season, and after a strong start the team crumbled in the second half of the term.
It was not surprise at all that the loss of Doucoure had a negative impact on Carlo Ancelotti’s side. They had won three games in a row before he missed seven games with injury. Everton went on to win just one of those games.
In Nunes, they’re acquiring a quality player. The midfielder contributed three goals and two assists in Liga NOS, despite playing just over 1,200 minutes.
In stark contrast, Allan contributed nothing in attack, whilst the Frenchman matches Nunes’ total, but, played over 1,000 more minutes.
Aside from the obvious injection of quality, Nunes will add a great deal of depth to the side.
The drop off in form after Doucoure’s injury was a warning sign for Everton. And it seems as though they’re heeded that warning.
