8 aerials won, 3 tackles: David Luiz shows why he deserves new Arsenal deal
David Luiz has often divided opinion among the Arsenal fan base and there is a discussion to be had over whether he deserves a contract extension.
Arsenal aren’t short of central defenders. Without Luiz, Mikel Arteta has Gabriel, Rob Holding, Pablo Mari and William Saliba who will return to the club after his loan at Nice.
With that in mind, perhaps it isn’t a difficult decision when it comes to whether or not to offer the Brazilian a new deal at the club.
The small problem right now for the Gunners is that Luiz is arguably playing his best football since arriving at the club in the summer of 2019.
Last night’s 1-0 defeat against Olympiacos in the Europa League showcased as much. Despite the loss, Luiz proved his worth with a strong defensive display for the Gunners.
According to Who Scored, Luiz won eight aerial challenges during the 90 minutes. That number is more than Gabriel, Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney won between them on the night.
He also won three tackles and three interceptions and despite losing, it wasn’t through any fault of Luiz’s.
The player hasn’t been without fault during his time with Arsenal. Last season he endured some really erratic moments which ultimately cost the team points.
What Luiz does bring to the table though is vast experience. He has tasted success in the Premier League, the Champions League and the Europa League.
With a relatively young squad in place at the Emirates Stadium, his influence could be telling and on current form, he deserves a new deal.
At 33, it’s unlikely to be anything other than a year or two but it could prove a wise decision by the Gunners.
