£40m player now suggests he is about to leave his club with Newcastle set to make approach

Newcastle will be playing UEFA Champions League football next season if victory can be secured over Everton on the final day.

The Magpies head into the Premier League finale with UEFA Champions League qualification in their own hands, currently sitting third.

However, Newcastle could even miss out on UEFA Europa League football depending on what happens on the final day, after Crystal Palace secured a spot in that competition by winning the FA Cup, meaning seventh place will have to settle for UEFA Conference League football.

Regardless of this uncertainty over European football, Newcastle are still making transfer plans, and a target in Harvey Elliott has now made some interesting comments.

Harvey Elliott suggests his Liverpool career is over

A story from Caught Offside recently claimed that Newcastle are set to make an approach for Elliott after his lack of starts under Arne Slot this season.

The attacking midfielder – who Liverpool value at £40m – has only made two Premier League starts this term.

Now, speaking after the 3-2 loss at Brighton on Monday, Elliott sounded like a man who knows his Liverpool career might be over, telling : “I have tried as hard as I could and whatever happens, happens. It’s about what’s best for my career.”

Slot certainly doesn’t seem to fancy the 22-year-old, so an exit looks likely.

Wolves are also keen to sign Elliott and Vitor Pereira wants the Liverpool No.19 to replace Matheus Cunha, who is close to joining Manchester United in a £62.5m deal.

However, if Newcastle can guarantee UEFA Champions League football on the final day, it could give them an edge over those at Molineux.
