£40.8m striker says Tottenham wanted to sign him in the summer, raves about Kane
Former Spurs striker Carlos Vinicius has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign him on a permanent deal following the end of his loan spell.
The Portuguese centre-forward joined Jose Mourinho’s side on a season-long loan deal last year. He was always just going to be a backup to Harry Kane, but he would’ve dreamt of displacing the English superstar.
However, Vinicius spent most of his time in North London watching and learning from Kane instead of playing alongside him. He believes that is the reason why he found it difficult at Tottenham, but he has admitted that he learnt a lot from the Spurs striker.

Asked if Tottenham wanted to sign him permanently, the 26-year-old, now at PSV, told : “Yes, at times Tottenham wanted to, but ended up not being able to.
“Regarding Kane, no comment is needed. He’s a great striker. For me, he’s among the top three strikers today. I’m glad I learned so much even though I was his substitute.
“In that situation, you only have two options: either let go, or learn and, in the minutes they give you. Prove your worth. That’s the one I chose. I took advantage, gave my best, proved my worth and I believe the Tottenham staff, including the fans, liked it.
“It wasn’t easy for me because, in my position, I was one of the best forwards in the world. I tried to enjoy training, games and everything that involved the Premier League as much as possible.”
Spurs wanted to sign Vinicius?
Just as he started speaking about Tottenham, Vinicius revealed that Spurs wanted to sign him on a permanent deal, but were ‘not able to in the end’. The reason for that is unclear, but we imagine it had something to do with his price tag.
When Spurs signed him on loan from Benfica at the start of last season, Mourinho’s men negotiated a clause that gave Tottenham an option to buy him for £40.8 million at the end of the campaign. ()
That is a lot of money for someone who was always going to be a backup for Kane. That is probably the reason why Spurs decided against signing him, but they really do need a backup striker, and it will be interesting to see what Nuno does in January.
