4 of the biggest mistakes Marco Silva has made at Everton this season
Everton recorded a much needed win against Southampton before the international break to take them to within three points of fifth-placed Sheffield United in the Premier League.
The Toffees are actually languishing in 15th, but another win against Norwich City on November 23 and things will look a whole lot better.
Despite the bigger picture not looking as bad as it seems, some Everton fans have not been happy with what they’ve seen from their side this season.
Manager Marco Silva has often been criticised, and here are four of the biggest mistakes he’s made so far this season.
Not buying a CB
Silva couldn’t bring Kurt Zouma back to Goodison Park following his successful loan spell, and seemingly didn’t have an alternative target to the Frenchman.
Yerry Mina has been one of Everton’s better performers this term, but Michael Keane has struggled.
Silva only has Mason Holgate in reserve at the moment, and Mina’s injury record is not particularly encouraging.
Not tightening up from set-pieces
Sticking with the defensive side of things, Silva’s side are still alarmingly bad when it comes to dealing with set-pieces.
The zonal marking just doesn’t work very well, and the manager has to give it some more thought.
The issue has followed him from Hull City to Watford and now to Merseyside, which is a real worry.
Management of Moise Kean
Everton have an amazingly talented young player on their hands in Moise Kean, but Silva is in danger of ruining his confidence.
There has been some talk of him leaving in January, which could be a good idea if the environment was right, but the Italian youngster needs to play and in the correct position.
It would be a real shame for him to want out because of a bad early experience.
Overreliance on off-form players
Silva has persisted with the likes of Seamus Coleman and Gylfi Sigurdsson for the majority of games this term when their form hasn’t been good enough.
Coleman is a popular figure at the club and wears the captain’s armband, but he doesn’t look the same player as a couple of years ago and Djibril Sidibe arguably needs a good run in the starting XI.
Sigurdsson’s drop-off has been strange. He is a top player on paper, but Silva has to be bold and leave him out when there’s others more deserving of a start.
