£35k-a-week star says he prefers haggis to paella, amid reports he has interest from Celtic and Spain
Not your everyday headline. But Brighton-owned goalkeeper Mat Ryan has told journalists that he prefers haggis to paella when asked, given that he has been linked with both Celtic and Real Sociedad. The Aussie goalkeeper is in the final year of his contract at Brighton, and a move is inevitable.
Ryan, 29, spent the second half of last season on loan at Arsenal, joining the club he supported as a child. He only played three times as Bernd Leno’s back-up, but Arsenal have seemingly chosen not to make a deal permanent. this week, Sociedad have won the race.
But clearly, 58-time Australia international Ryan is yet to make up his mind – giving Celtic some hope over a move. The former Club Brugge and Valencia goalkeeper answered haggis when asked which he prefers. But then, Ryan continued to comment on his future, sitting on the fence.
“Haggis every day of the week!” . “Nah, at the minute I’m on the fence. I’m not sure what I fancy, what my tastebuds are craving just now. I’ll have to wait and see. At the minute, just nothing. I’m just waiting and seeing. Until, I guess, I get a bit of a craving to find out.
“Obviously, given the relationship between Ange and I in the past, in the national team, I think there’s a lot of people putting two and two together. It’s interesting, that move may come about. I mean, it’s obviously always flattering to have interest and all that.”
Celtic must fight tooth and nail to get Ryan this summer
The goalkeeping area is one that requires instant attention. While Ange Postecoglou has said that he is giving a clean slate to all of his players – including flop signing Vasilis Barkas – he still needs to make a signing between the sticks. Ryan is absolutely perfect.
Fraser Forster has shown that Celtic need a dominant, commanding goalkeeper that is a shot-stopper. He claims crosses, organises and saves shots, before he can play out from the back. £35k-a-week Ryan would be the ideal addition for Celtic. It depends what he would cost.
