£34m player is set to leave Arsenal on loan with medical now set

Arsenal are expected to be very active in the market in the final days of this summer’s transfer window.

The Gunners haven’t pulled off any huge signings yet. David Raya’s loan was turned into a permanent deal at the start of July before Riccardo Calafiori was signed a few weeks later. Mikel Merino is set to join Arsenal next.

As far as outgoings are concerned, Emile Smith Rowe’s move to Fulham is the one major deal Arsenal have pulled off in this window, but there could be a few more in the coming days.

Fabrizio Romano has shared the latest on one of them.

Arsenal give permission to Fabio Vieira to undergo Porto medical

Arsenal signed Fabio Vieira in a deal worth £34 million from Porto in the summer of 2022 ().

The Portuguese midfielder is an excellent player. He is technically superb, has fantastic vision and his ball striking is very, very good too.

However, the physicality of the English game has proved to be a bit too much for Vieira over the last two years, which is why he hasn’t played a lot under Mikel Arteta.

Now, with Merino coming in and Ethan Nwaneri showing huge promise, Arsenal have decided to allow Vieira to leave on loan.

Porto entered talks to re-sign him a few days ago, and after successful negotiations between the two clubs, Romano has revealed that a deal has been struck.

Arsenal and Porto are said to have signed all documents for a season-long loan for Vieira, and the Gunners have given him permission to fly to Portugal to undergo a medical and complete all other formalities.

For those wondering, this is a straight loan – Porto will have no option or obligation to make this move permanent in 2025.

Romano tweeted late last night: “Fabio Vieira’s loan move to Porto from Arsenal is sealed! All documents have been signed.

“AFC have just authorized Fabio to travel on Tuesday for medical tests. Loan move confirmed, NO buy option.”

Vieira has a point to prove

It made sense for Arsenal to sign Vieira when they did – he checked a lot of boxes.

The 24-year-old was viewed as a backup for Martin Odegaard, but his versatility meant he could play out wide and also as a number eight when required.

Despite that, Vieira has started just five Premier League games in two full seasons, which is not good at all for someone who cost £34 million.

Now back at Porto, a club and league he’s very familiar with, Vieira has a chance to play regularly and prove to the world he has what it takes.

However, unless he has an absolutely insane season, we just can’t see a way back for him at Arsenal – we expect him to be sold in the summer of 2025.
