£30m player actually walked away from talks with Manchester City in favour of Tottenham

Manchester City have a pulling power like few other clubs in Europe.

The Citizens can promise targets the chance to work with Pep Guardiola – arguably the greatest football manager in history – with a near guarantee of silverware each season, perhaps aside from the current campaign after a strange run of just one win in 11 outings across all competitions.

Manchester City also have the financial power to fend off most clubs – although the reigning Premier League champions actually missed out on a target to Tottenham back in July.

Tottenham beat Manchester City to Archie Gray

A story from the now states that Tottenham fended off Manchester City to sign Archie Gray from Leeds back in July.

Spurs paid for the precocious 18-year-old by promising him an immediate spot in the first-team under Ange Postecoglou, whereas Manchester City were honest in admitting they would only view the teenager as a development option for the future if he moved to the Etihad Stadium.

Gray – who admires William Saliba – needed to be patient in north London after being left on the bench in seven of Tottenham’s opening 12 Premier League games this season, but he has since played 90 minutes in two of the last three matches.

In total, the England U21 international has made 17 appearances across all competitions for Spurs so far this term, playing in the centre of defence, central midfield and also in both full-back positions for Postecoglou.

Clearly, Gray – who has been likened to Declan Rice – is a highly versatile talent, one who is willing to play almost anywhere for Tottenham.

Where Spurs expect Archie Gray to play in future

As aforesaid, the Durham-born wonderkid has been used in several positions this season by Postecoglou, but there is one area Spurs expect him to eventually nail down.

Tottenham view Gray as a central midfielder above all despite his ability to play in defence – according to the Telegraph – with Spurs under the impression he can develop into a world class player in that position.

As Yves Bissouma struggles to impress, we see no reason why the Leeds academy graduate can’t make a central midfield spot his own by the start of next season.
