Rival suitors drop out of race for £28m West Ham strike target due to his wages
West Ham United have been linked with Hugo Ekitike in recent months as they look to bolster their attacking ranks.
In November, a report from claimed that the Hammers feel they can give Ekitike the game time that he needs.
And in December, claimed that Paris Saint-Germain are eager to offload the 21-year-old striker in the January transfer window.
Ekitike ‘maintains a good rating in England’, where another loan move would be considered ‘a good deal’ for all involved, added the latter report.
Now, Sky Sport Germany journalist Plettenberg provided an update on that is fairly positive as far as West Ham are concerned.
Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt were previously in the race for Ekitike alongside West Ham, but they can’t afford his wages, claimed the reporter.
Crucially, the young striker made a “great impression” with Frankfurt, but the only way a deal can go ahead is if he accepts a “drastic reduction” to his salary.
West Ham could help relaunch Hugo Ekitike career
While Ekitike’s salary may be too high for the likes of Wolfsburg and Frankfurt, there are several West Ham players already on wages equal to or higher than the Frenchman.
For context, €7million a year works out at around £6million a year, which is just under £116,000 a week. As per , this would make him the Hammers’ fifth-highest paid player.
Ekitike certainly needs to leave PSG to revive his career. It was a good shout making the move to France’s biggest club, but it hasn’t worked out.
Meanwhile, the Hammers are desperate to bolster their front ranks this month amid a personnel crisis in attack.
If Ekitike joins West Ham, they’d be getting themselves ‘‘.
Jacek Kulig of previously deemed him a 9 out of 10 potential and likened him to Thierry Henry.
The ‘amazing‘ Frenchman is only going to get better once he gets his career back on track, and he could develop into a top player at the London Stadium.
