28-year-old Arsenal man could now see loan terminated as club make approach for PL player
Alex Runarsson could soon return to Arsenal with Cardiff City making an approach for another goalkeeper in the January transfer window.
Arsenal fans would be forgiven for almost forgetting that Alex Runarsson remains on the books at the Emirates. Ultimately, the 28-year-old has proved to be a strange signing for the Gunners.
He is now out on loan for a third time since joining Arsenal in 2020. However, Cardiff City may perhaps look to bring a premature end to the Iceland international’s loan this month.
Arsenal goalkeeper Alex Runarsson could see Cardiff loan terminated
According to , Cardiff have registered an interest in signing Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Ethan Horvath.

Horvath is now into the final six months of his contract at the City Ground. And Wales Online notes that the Cardiff owners have a good relationship with the Nottingham Forest hierarchy. So it would appear that there are not too many hurdles standing between the Bluebirds and a move for the USMNT international.
Another unsuccessful spell out on loan
Runarsson only made six appearances for Cardiff in the Championship, keeping one clean sheet. His most recent appearance came in mid-December. He did only concede eight league goals across those games. However, he had to pick the ball out of the net five times in a League Cup tie with Blackburn.
Obviously, Runarsson returning to Arsenal is unlikely to lead to the goalkeeper coming into Mikel Arteta’s plans. You would think that the Gunners will look to find another move for him.
Ultimately, it is hard to see Runarsson playing for Arsenal again. He was never signed to be the number one. But he came in in the window in which Emiliano Martinez moved on. So he had a tough task when he came in for Bernd Leno.
Unfortunately, he was unable to take the opportunities when they came his way. And with that, the chances of Arsenal receiving any sort of fee for the stopper continue to diminish.
