27-year-old Tottenham player says Ange Postecoglou has told him something truly ‘special’

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Yves Bissouma has been one of the main beneficiaries of Ange Postecoglou’s management at Spurs.

In an interview with the Tottenham media team, the 27-year-old has revealed how good the new Spurs manager has been to him.

Bissouma joined Tottenham in the summer of 2022 to much fanfare, but his maiden season at Spurs didn’t quite go to plan.

Antonio Conte didn’t give Bissouma much game time and, come the new season, the Mali international seemed to face an uncertain future at Tottenham.

However, Bissouma worked hard in pre-season and, under Postecoglou, he is now showing the kind of form that made him such a highly sought-after player at Brighton.

‘It’s so nice!’

Now, with the international break under way, the Spurs ace has shared what Postecoglou has done and said to him that has helped get him firing on all cylinders again.

“I take full responsibility when it’s time to work and to change things,” began Bissouma. “So when I was injured at the end of last season I was already preparing for this one, right?

“So I came in and there was a new coach. We see football the same way. He talks to me before training, he gives me all his trust, he explains.

“After that, it’s up to me to do things well. You have a coach who understands football, who tries to talk to you as well. It’s so nice! It’s been a long time since anyone said anything to me.

“Sometimes you know you have something, but when people who know more than you, tell you, it gives you even more confidence. You know what I mean?

“I was already confident but what Ange told me was special. It changed something. You know?”

Credit to Bissouma for working so hard to get back on track after a difficult maiden season at Spurs, and credit also to Postecoglou for building the foundations that have helped the midfielder get back to his best.

There isn’t much that Postecoglou hasn’t done right in his first few months at Tottenham. Indeed, the only things that you could argue haven’t gone to plan – the Fulham cup loss and the two league losses before the break – were due to lack of strength in depth.

This is something that Spurs will be able to remedy over the next couple of transfer windows. The strongest Spurs starting XI is superb but Postecoglou will need to ensure that, in case the squad becomes depleted, that there are good enough replacements to maintain quality.
