£25m Tottenham Hotspur man could now be on this way to the World Cup, he’s never been called up before – opinion

Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur squad is starting to become decimated by injuries.

He’ll be hoping that his side don’t suffer any more casualties before the World Cup break begins.

Several members of his team will now be sweating over their chances of being fully fit to feature in Qatar.

The injury suffered by Son Heung-min against Marseille is serious enough for the South Korean to require surgery.

has suggested that Son should be able to play with a mask, but there’s no definitive return date.

Cristian Romero is also reportedly unavailable for Spurs before the World Cup, but should be fit enough to join up with Argentina.

Brazilian Richarlison has also been unavailable since picking up an injury against Everton, but could return to action next week.

There are still members of Conte’s squad that won’t be sure of their plans through December.

One of those players is left-back Ryan Sessegnon, who could now have a chance to go to the World Cup.

Southgate’s full-back options

England have arguably the best depth in world football when it comes to full-backs.

The constant debate over whether Champions League winner Trent Alexander-Arnold will make the squad demonstrates how good Gareth Southgate’s choices are.

However, England fans have seen injury after injury pile up in the build-up to next week’s squad announcement.

On the right, Reece James and Kyle Walker are both doubts, .

Southgate may now be considering his options of the opposite flank after seeing Ben Chilwell pull up for Chelsea yesterday.

, and there’s currently no timeline on his when he’ll be fit.

This could all play into Sessegnon’s chance of going to the World Cup later this month.

Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier is capable of playing on the left, but now may be needed in his natural right-back slot.

Another player who could be played out of position there is Bukayo Saka, but he’s also had his recent injury worries.

Luke Shaw has been in-and-out of the Manchester United side this season.

However, in recent week he does appear to be playing his way back into form.

Another Newcastle player, Dan Burn, has been in sensational form and will be hoping like Sessegnon to earn his first call-up.

Sessegnon is also surely ahead of Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell, who has won two caps but not been called-up since March.

Sessegnon could go the World Cup

is no stranger to the England set-up, having represented the under-21s on 20 occasions.

He’s certainly impressed Antonio Conte, who regularly rotates him with Ivan Perisic.

Sessegnon was a winger during his time at Fulham, and even played on the right briefly against Marseille in midweek.

That versatility is always valuable in a tournament environment if injuries start to build up.

Sessegnon is solid defensively but a threat going forward, and would suit the wing-back role in Southgate’s system.

He’s yet to receive a senior call-up, but is one of England’s best preforming left-backs this season.

Sessegnon could go to the World Cup this month, and it would be a just reward for a player going from strength to strength.
