24-year-old still unsure whether Tottenham will keep him next season

Japhet Tanganga is yet to find out whether he will still be a Tottenham Hotspur player next season, with Spurs having an option to extend his contract by a year.

Japhet Tanganga has had a turbulent season. The 24-year-old saw his loan spell to Augsburg cut short midway through the campaign after not even making his debut for the club.

He would then join Millwall in January. And his time at The Den has been a lot more successful, with the defender barely missing a minute in recent weeks.

Tanganga has been excellent for Millwall, who have enjoyed an upturn in form since Neil Harris recently returned as the club’s manager.

Japhet Tanganga yet to learn if his Tottenham contract will be extended

In truth, it would be a big surprise if Tanganga played more than a peripheral role for Tottenham again. He is not exactly a youngster as he turns 25 before the end of the month.

But it seems that the door at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium may not be shut yet. The (17/3; page 64) reports that Tanganga is still waiting to learn whether his contract will be extended by a further year or whether he will leave Spurs as a free agent this summer.

Tanganga can discuss a pre-contract deal with clubs abroad. But it seems that he is still awaiting a decision from his parent club.

Long-term future surely lies elsewhere

Ange Postecoglou has used a number of players who struggled under Antonio Conte. So it is ominous for those who were loaned out last summer. And Tanganga is obviously amongst those.

Tottenham may feel that taking up the option to extend his contract may make more sense, even if his future lies elsewhere. That would obviously open the door to Spurs receiving a fee for the defender in the summer.

But he is surely going to need a brilliant end to the campaign, as well as a very strong pre-season to stand a chance of catching Postecoglou’s eye.
