22-year-old is now surely set to start Tottenham’s first pre-season game after injury news today – opinion
Ryan Sessegnon will surely start Tottenham Hotspur’s first pre-season game after that new signing Ivan Perisic has been ruled out with an injury.
Perisic is set to miss Spurs’ first pre-season fixture against South Korean side Team K League tomorrow, as he is still suffering with a calf injury which he sustained at the end of last season while playing for Inter Milan.
With Sergio Reguilon being one of four players left out of the travelling squad, Sessegnon will surely get the nod and have the chance to impress Spurs boss Antonio Conte.
The 22-year-old will be eager to get one step ahead in the fight for the left wing-back spot, as he looks set to battle Perisic for the position in Conte’s side.
Last season, the England U21 International came on leaps and bounds under the Italian and found himself above Reguilon in the pecking order by the end of the Premier League campaign.
Sessegnon had endured a difficult time at Spurs before Conte’s arrival. He struggled with persistent hamstring injuries and was sent on a season-long loan to Bundesliga side Hoffenheim during the 2020-21 campaign.
But since Conte arrived in North London, he has stepped up and at the end of last season he started Tottenham’s last six Premier League games.
Perisic is the perfect player for Sessegnon to learn from
Sessegnon faces stiff competition for his place in the side after the signing of Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan. The Croatian previously played as a winger before he was managed by Conte at the Nerazzurri.
But the former Inter boss moulded him into an excellent wing-back and Perisic is now coming back off one of his best seasons in Italy. The 33-year-old scored 10 goals and put up 9 assists in all competitions last season.
As a veteran of the game and Champions League winner, Perisic seems like the ideal player for Sessegnon to learn from.
The battle between the pair for a place in Conte’s side will be an intriguing one and at the moment, you’d have to favour Perisic due to his experience. But Sessegnon now is likely to have a chance to stake his claim in the upcoming pre-season match and he’ll be eager to do so while the Croatian is sidelined.
