Arsenal started December with back to back defeats in the Premier League, but they recovered brilliantly and Martin Odegaard was one of the biggest reasons why.

The Norwegian has been absolutely incredible for the Gunners over the past few weeks. His outstanding form has been keeping Emile Smith Rowe out of the side, even though the Englishman has scored in each of his last four games.

Arsenal were heavily criticised for signing Odegaard ahead of the likes of James Maddison and Emi Buendia in the summer. However, Mikel Arteta has been proven right now and the Norwegian could well get an award now in recognition of the incredible month he had in the Premier League.

Here’s what Odegaard’s stats looked like in December…

Martin Odegaard was the best player in the Premier League in December

Arsenal’s first two games last month were against Manchester United and Everton away from home and the Gunners lost both games. However, Odegaard was the star man, scoring against both sides.

The Norwegian, labelled as ‘‘ by Arteta, continued his good run and found the net against Southampton in the very next game as well. Arsenal returned to winning ways and ended the month in fantastic style. Odegaard finished off December with three more assists, taking his goal involvements tally to six last month – more than any other player in the Premier League. ()

As per stats recorded at the end of Arsenal’s last game of the year, Odegaard created more chances (20), created more Big Chances (4) and played more through balls (8) than any other player in the English top-flight in December. ()

Player Of The Month award contender?

Odegaard is definitely a contender for the Premier League Player Of The Month award for December, but if stats are anything to go by, he should be the winner without any debate.

His numbers last month were phenomenal, the way he performed even in Arsenal’s losses proved his character and how he ran the show for the Gunners against Southampton, West Ham, Leeds and Norwich to round off the year was absolutely outstanding.

It will be interesting to see if Odegaard does get his hands on the award once the announcement is made. He will face competition from the likes of Mo Salah and James Maddison, but he has directly been involved in more goals than both of them, which should give him the edge.
