18-year-old ‘clinical finisher’ could replace Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr in Spurs squad during AFCON

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has another dilemma on his hands in the coming weeks.

Two international tournaments – the Africa Cup of Nations and the Asia Cup – begin in January, and several key Spurs players are set to take part in the competitions.

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min is set to compete for South Korea in the latter.

Meanwhile, Spurs midfielders Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are set to compete in the former, for Senegal and Mali respectively.

However, with regards to the Spurs midfield, Postecoglou may have just been given some food for thought in terms of a potential replacement in the squad.

Tottenham academy talent Rio Kyerematen is making quite a name for himself in the Spurs setup, and scored a great goal on Monday night.

As per the Tottenham , the 18-year-old helped Spurs Under-21s double their lead in their 2-1 win over Sunderland’s U21s in the Premier League Cup.

Kyerematen won the ball back just inside the final third, drove forward, got himself into space and slotted into the far corner from just inside the box.

The teenager has already trained with the Spurs first team on a number of occasions, with Antonio Conte calling him up when the player was just 16 years old.

Tottenham have a ‘highly skilful’ midfield talent in their ranks in Rio Kyerematen

Kyerematen joined Tottenham when he was eight, and has progressed through the ranks, earning promotion to the Under-21s this summer.

In the last two seasons, he registered some impressive statistics at Under-18 level.

In 2022-23, Kyerematen grabbed five goals and seven assists from 17 outings. And in 2021-22, he managed seven goals and four assists from 27 outings.

Last year, Tottenham youth team expert wrote: “A versatile midfield player who can play as a defensive-midfielder, a central-midfielder and as a CAM, Rio Kyerematen is highly skilful on the ball.

“The player… is very capable of going past players with great skill, and he likes to go on surging and skilful forward runs with the ball from midfield.”

Superhotspur also wrote that Kyerematen is “tenacious and good at winning the ball in midfield” and also “a clinical finisher with the ball on the edge of the penalty area”.

This was all on display in the clip that Spurs shared on Monday evening.

Obviously Kyerematen is still a bit raw and shouldn’t just be thrown in at the deep end, but in terms of training with the seniors and making the squad, he’d be a good shout while Bissouma and Sarr are away.
