£110k-a-week Spurs player set to captain his nation for the first time tonight

Tottenham Hotspur have a number of players currently representing their countries during the March international break.

For instance, Spurs trio Ben Davies, Brennan Johnson and Joe Rodon will be  to get Wales over the line and into the finals of Euro 2024.

Meanwhile, Tottenham captain Son Heung-min is in 2026 World Cup qualifying action with South Korea, for whom he also wears the armband.

Tonight, another Spurs player is set to captain his national team, the first time he will do so in 75 outings for his country.

The player in question is Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, whose first cap for the Euro 1992 champions came just under a decade ago.

The 28-year-old first played for Denmark on 28 May 2014, playing the full 90 minutes in a friendly against Sweden.

Since then, Hojbjerg has clocked up 74 caps for the Scandinavian nation, including at Euro 2020 and at the 2022 World Cup.

What has Spurs midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg said about his impending maiden captain’s outing for Denmark?

Now, with Denmark taking on the Faroe Islands in a friendly in Brondby on Tuesday night, the Spurs man will get the honour of leading his nation out.

“This is the first time I will be captain of the national team,” Hojbjerg told . “It is big for me. It’s a pat on the back. I just have to keep doing all the things I have done up until now.”

“I will not forget, when I had only played a few international matches when (former Denmark boss) Morten Olsen took hold of me and said that I had what it took to one day become captain.

“He was right about that. 75 games later, (Olsen’s prediction) comes true. I am very grateful. (It is an honour) to be one of those who take responsibility. I want to keep doing that.”

It’s great to see Hojbjerg being given the honour of captaining his country, and not long before Euro 2024 as well.

The ace has been a stalwart for Denmark all these years, so it’s a just reward for all the good work he has done for and alongside his nation.

No matter what his future holds at Tottenham, there’s no doubt Hojbjerg is a top player with the right skills and attitude to do a job for the best teams.
