West Ham United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup after a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last night, but stats show that Declan Rice was the best player on the pitch.

Antonio Conte’s men are desperate for some silverware this season. Spurs need to end their trophy drought to become a force under the Italian and they took a big step in the right direction yesterday.

Goals from Steven Bergwijn and Lucas Moura were enough to send Spurs through to the semi-final.

Tottenham players will be absolutely delighted with the result, but by crunching the numbers, we realise that one West Ham player didn’t really deserve to be on the losing side last night.

Tottenham v West Ham: Stats show Declan Rice was the best player on the pitch

Rice started in his usual central midfield role last night and he was absolutely brilliant.

The Englishman had 106 touches of the ball and completed 86 out of his 90 attempted passes, maintaining a stunning 96 per cent passing accuracy. He successfully completed six out of his seven attempted long balls and 100 per cent of dribbles as well.

Rice also registered two tackles and two interceptions last night. He also won nine of his 12 attempted ground duels and was dribbled past just once in the entire game. ()

gave him a 7.8/10 rating for his display – higher than any other player who stepped on the pitch yesterday.

Were West Ham unlucky?

Conte deserves a lot of credit for getting his Spurs side over the line last night, but if you’re a West Ham fan, you have every reason to feel unlucky.

The Hammers had close to 60 per cent of possession, completed more passes, created more big chances and even hit the woodwork once. On another day, West Ham could’ve easily scored two or three more goals, but it wasn’t meant to be yesterday.

Moyes and co can now focus on the Premier League and the Europa League. They are in a good place in both competitions, but their recent form is a worry, and they’ll have to find a way to become the dangerous team they were a month or so ago.
