100% duels won, 89% passing accuracy… Surprise Celtic starter was brilliant vs Feyenoord
Hands up if you feared the worst for Celtic when you heard Stephen Welsh was starting against Feyenoord last night.
Well, maybe fearing the worst is the wrong turn of phrase but considering the 23-year-old has hardly kicked a ball in anger all season there would have been genuine concerns that he wouldn’t be up to the pace of Champions League football.
However, after being thrown in against the Dutch champions last night, the Scotland u21 defender put in a brilliant display and he was one of the best players on the pitch.
Stephen Welsh was outstanding for Celtic vs Feyenoord
Rated an impressive 7.6 by , Welsh put in a defensive masterclass to help Celtic record their first Champions League win in over six years.
In the 75 minutes he was on the pitch, Welsh won 5/5 of all his duels against a Feyenoord side determined to leave Glasgow with all three points.

The youngster also made a last-man tackle to prevent the Dutch side from going one-on-one with Joe Hart, made seven defensive actions, once clearance and three ball recoveries.
Welsh also helped Celtic attack Feyenoord as he made six passes into the Eredivisie side’s final third. With a passing accuracy of 89% Welsh was cool calm and collected as he never gave the ball away once and was never dispossessed.
If Rodgers is looking for someone to call upon instead of Nat Phillips during a defensive crisis, Welsh just threw his name right into the ring with that incredible performance last night.
