0 goals in 10 games: Wolves right not to splash out on Goncalo Guedes

This summer, Wolverhampton Wanderers were linked with yet another promising young Portuguese attacker. Goncalo Guedes was being linked with a move away from Paris Saint-Germain. The former Benfica attacker had struggled to settle in the French capital and Wolves’ links to Jorge Mendes soon made a deal look possible.

that Wolves were interested in the signature of the Portuguese talent. The report suggested that Guedes remained available at PSG, who wanted €60 million (£53m) for his services. Valencia, where he spent last season on loan, were only willing to pay €40 million (£36m). Ideally, PSG wanted a big sale to help their Financial Fair Play record.

Wolves interest amounted to nothing. Guedes did eventually return to Valencia, the La Liga side got their man for the £36 million they initially hoped to.

Wolves moved on from Guedes, with Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore arriving in attack.

Judging by the form of Guedes so far this season, Wolves were right not to splash the cash.

The 21-year-old has played just 10 times this season, spending some time out with a thigh strain.

In those 10 games he has provided no goals and just the one assist for Los Che. That is hardly the form of a £36 million investment. In time, Guedes will still hope to prove himself at Valencia. But in the cut-throat recently promoted world Wolves live in, time is of the essence. The club made the right call not splashing such lavish cash on a player who needs to slowly rediscover his best form.
